"You ever had a leaf race?"
Mauve glanced at the black tobiano mare, trying to gauge her reaction. Marceline stared out over the leaf-covered paddock, face skeptical.
"A...leaf race?" Marceline asked. "What does that involve?"
"Well, you know how the humans go around the whole ranch and collects all the leaves to dump them in this paddock?"
"Yes, I know that. They come in with those loud machines and blow them into huge piles to be collected." Marceline snorted; Mauve knew she hated anything loud. The mouse grey tobiano continued her explanation.
"Well, a leaf race is when you race someone through this huge pile of leaves," she explained. "Since I know how much you love a little competition, I figured I'd challenge you to this."
Looking at Marceline now, Mauve could see a small smile spread across her face. Mauve knew she had been right to bring Marceline here.
"So how do we get in?" Marceline asked. Mauve swung her head to the right, looking down the fence line.
"There's a gate over there where the lock is loose. It's easy to pry it open." She led Marceline down to the gate, then leaned over and used her teeth to open it. The two mares walked into the paddock. Close to the fence, the leaves were sparse and they could still see the browning grass underneath. The closer to the centre they got, however, the deeper the leaf pile became, until they rose to the mares' ankles. Mauve glanced at Marceline.
"You ready?"
"You know it." came the confident response. Mauve grinned.
They lined up side by side, eyes focused on their target. They had decided upon an apple tree at the opposite end of the paddock.
On the count of three, both mares bolted across the paddock. Leaves flew everywhere, making it a challenge to see.
It was a tough race, and they were neck and neck for most of the distance. Eventually, however, Marceline took the lead, and skidded to a halt in front of the tree just before Mauve. The mustang let out a satisfied snort.
"I win." Mauve grinned.
"So you do."
