Celso shook his head and snorted, his mane slapping against his neck. He and his daughter, Vantablack, were competing together for the first time today, and he had to admit that he was extremely excited. He glanced at the younger mare next to him, but she was staring straight ahead. From her body language he could tell she was nervous.
"Don't stress about today, you'll do fine."
Vantablack shot him a grateful look, but said nothing. Behind them, Keane finished up inspecting their tack, and a show official attached the log to the chains they were pulling. Celso could feel the weight of it already, but he was ready for the challenge.
The course was simple enough. The two horses had to pull their log from one end of the course to the other. The distance was marked with two sets of cones. They only had about a minute to do it, so pacing themselves would be key. Keane finished checking them over, and then the two horses were introduced over the loud speaker. Celso felt Vantablack tense next to him, and he let out a snort. A tug on the reins from Keane prompted both horses to begin.
The log was heavy, much heavier than many of the logs they had practiced with. Both horses moved in unison, and Celso could see that they were both tackling the problem differently. He himself was used to doing farm work, so was focusing on putting force into pulling the log. Vantablack pulled carriages most of the time, so was focused on keeping her pulling force balanced. It was interesting to watch, and yet it worked.
They were more than halfway through the course, and Celso could see that Vantablack was starting to get tired. Celso himself was beginning to feel the strain, but he wasn't going to let it stop him. He shot Vantablack an encouraging look, and she snorted. Flicking her tail, she continued forward. Celso matched her steps, and eventually, they reached the end of the course. They pulled the log over the finish line, then stopped.
Celso rested his head over Vantablack's shoulders.
"You did great." he said softly. She grinned at him.
Celso looked up at the board. 57.19 seconds. Would that be enough?
